The 5th Latin America and Caribbean Art Exhibition was unveiled yesterday at the China Cultural Palace of Nationalities as part of the 18th Meet in Beijing Arts Festival and 6th Latin America and Caribbean Arts Season.

The Exhibition is co-organized by China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Embassies of Argentina, Ecuador, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela and was opened under the theme "Sharing the Beauty". It will run for eight days until May 22, 2018, featuring painting, literature illustration, sculpture, photography and installation from the Latin American and Caribbean region.

Latin America is known as a place where many races, faiths and cultures converge and merge with influences and traditions inherited from ancient civilizations of Africa, Europe and Asia. The artworks showcased in this year's exhibition provide an aesthetic opportunity for reconstruction while also promoting understanding of the important role of the LAC region in modern and contemporary art history. More importantly, it gives local audiences the chance to explore and understand the vast diversity and colourful cultural contexts of this vibrant region.

Guyana’s photographer, Mr. Nikil Ramkarran is a two-time winner of the Guyana Prize for photography and uses his lens to seek the minutiae of his connection to his homeland; in the expressions of openness and airiness of the seawall at Kingston, the crash of the waves, the peculiar salty freshness of air blowing off the water or the sharp white heat of the early morning after sunrise.

Much like the other artists, Mr. Ramkarran sought to make a contribution towards bringing the cultural imprint of Latin America and the Caribbean into the poetic age, thereby making modernity and nostalgic memories meet in the eyes and gestures of the subjects and sharing through them, thoughts on popular culture, history and society.

This was the Embassy's second time to participate in the Art Exhibition.

The Meet in Beijing Arts Festival is an annual event sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, the Beijing Municipal Government and the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and aims to promote cultural understanding and exchanges between China and countries around the world.
