    MESSAGE FROM THE AMBASSADOR

I am pleased to warmly welcome you to on your visit to Guyana’s virtual home in the People’s Republic of China. If you are now just learning about Guyana, you will find that our country is truly unique – made up of a diverse, English-speaking people, from a Caribbean culture.  Our native land teems with the exotic vegetation, wildlife, birds and rivers of the Amazon rainforest in South America.
Guyana became the first English-speaking Caribbean country to open diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1972, two years after our nation declared itself a Republic.
Nonetheless, the foundation for a solid and lasting relationship had already been laid much earlier, when Chinese immigrants first  settled in our country in 1853 to labor on our sugar plantations. Their descendants became a prominent fixture in the economic, social, political and cultural pillars of our society.  Today voyagers arriving from China have different purposes in mind.  They are arriving as entrepreneurs, tradesmen, technicians and tourists.
These strong bonds between our two countries and peoples have helped to forge a solid friendship, a common understanding and a mutual approach to solutions aimed at improving the living conditions of both our peoples.
Our two nations, together with our partners in the international community, are strongly committed to safeguarding  international peace, eradicating  poverty, strengthening  security, achieving  social progress and promoting  prosperity both within our respective regions and for people the world over. The pursuit of these common aims is implemented at the regional level through the China-CELAC Forum, within the mechanisms for China-CARICOM cooperation and by way of bilateral initiatives between our two countries.
Guyana and China share similar objectives in terms of their respective development policies.  They have each resolved to protect their sovereignty, defend their territorial integrity and increase economic cooperation.  They are both determined to ensure sustainable development within a green economy while placing their people at the center of all policies.
Like China, ours is a nation that faces the future with optimism and confidence. A windfall petroleum discovery in 2015 has begun to set the stage for Guyana to become a major Caribbean oil exporter which promises rapid prosperity and acceleratedeconomic expansion.  Taken together with the abundance of resources in other sectors, including agriculture, forestry, minerals, and tourism, the petroleum-backed economy will multiply the prospects for trade, investment and cooperation between Guyana and China.  Indeed, the future may hold that Guyana becomes the China of the Caribbean!
As promising as these prospects might prove to be, Guyana is distinguished by two other similarities it shares with China - our incredible natural beauty and the heartfelt warmth and hospitality of our people.
Whatever your purpose for visiting our website, whether you are an entrepreneur, a tourist, a student or simply a curiosity seeker, we hope that your visit here turns out to be interesting and informative.
Do return often and please contact us at the Embassy for all your additional needs.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Bayney Karran
