Global Diplomats Celebrate Cultural Diversity in Beijing

Nearly 1,000 delegates, including 400 diplomats from 156 countries and regions as well as representatives from leading Chinese enterprises, gathered at the China World Hotel in Beijing on Dec. 2 to enjoy a night of performances highlighting the traditional cultures of China and other nations in the world.

The 2017 Global Diplomats’ Chinese Cultural Night was held to boost international communication and promote “win-win” cooperation between China and foreign countries.

H.E. Bayney Karran, Guyana’s Ambassador to China and rotating Chairman of the event’s Organizing Committee, delivered the following remarks to the 2017 Global Diplomats’ Chinese Cultural Night in Beijing.

SPEECH BY THE ROTATING CHAIRMAN OF GLOBAL DIPLOMATS’ CHINESE CULTURAL NIGHT COMMITTEE, AMBASSADOR OF GUYANA H. E. MR. BAYNEY KARRAN.

Your Excellencies Ambassadors and Colleague Diplomats,
    Distinguished Invitees,
Honourable Representatives of the Government of China,
    Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Global Diplomats’ Chinese Cultural Night, organized and hosted by LOOKWE, is fast becoming one of the premier events on the annual diplomatic calendar of the City of Beijing. As Rotating Chairman of the Cultural Night for 2017 it is my privilege and my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you, to this evening’s gala of gifts, of dining and dancing, of fun and fashion -entertainment that has been designed specially with Diplomats in mind.

Tonight’s activities have been inspired by China’s One Belt One Road Initiative. As such, you are about to be treated to a collection of cultural performances that evoke the rich customs and traditions of China as well as music and dance from countries beyond China’s horizons.

My friends, the City of Beijing is an ideal location for this Global Cultural Night. Beijing Culture extends back in time to the dawn of the human era and to the civilization of Peking Man. Since then Beijing, like places elsewhere in China, has recorded human cultures of immense richness and fascination, cultures that continue to flourish up to today, perpetuating the stupendous traditions of China even in this modern era of dazzling technological advances.

Any community of human beings, isolated from others, will begin to evolve practices peculiar to themselves, firstly in small ways, such as the manner in which they greet each other, prepare food and adorn themselves. In time changes will be more profound. A new language will emerge, as will their own theories about the origin of the world and the end of life -all factors that will influence their social organization, their norms and their values. This total system of practices and beliefs is what we refer to as a people’s culture.

The great diversity and richness of the cultures which comprise our world is the hallmark of human civilization and is the most profound accomplishment of the human species. Yet, this very diversity can serve to ignite the sparks of conflict, as you have noticed from the many regions of the globe where strife and hostility are prevalent.

There seems no better way to promote peace and harmony than to foster greater understanding among our different cultures. It has become an increasingly pressing imperative to develop tolerance for others, to appreciate their beliefs, their values, their heritage and their traditions.

From this standpoint, building cross-cultural bridges of understanding would lead to more empathy, greater tolerance and stronger unity among the peoples of the world. It follows, therefore, that appreciation for the cultures of others is a prerequisite tor international stability, peace and development. Cooperation across cultures can help to reinforce international security, environmental protection, the spread of technology and the conservation of resources.

It is with these principles in mind that LOOKWE has assembled tonight’s series of performances. It is to express desires for peace, to promote goodwill and to bring hope for the betterment of humankind.
These ideals of unity in diversity, peace, tolerance and harmony, are ideals that are shared by the Embassy of Guyana. Like China, and so many other countries whose cultures are on display here tonight, Guyana is a country of religious and ethnic variety. It is home to a tapestry of culture whose mixtures have rendered it colourful and unique.

Located in the Amazon rainforest but with a culture that is distinctly Caribbean, the foreparents of the Guyanese people proceeded from four continents -Africa, Asia, America and Europe. The three great religions of Christianity, Islam and Hinduism all flourish within our communities in total harmony.

Imagine, therefore, the rich, diverse character of our dress, cuisine and arts as well as the vibrant nature of our festivals and traditions -all with the pristine natural beauty of the great Amazon rainforest as a backdrop.

Ladies and Gentlemen, like Guyana, the world is a melting pot of cultures, integrating and developing in a harmonious way. We have to make our multiple cultures work together, in solidarity and peace, toward common goals.

With these purposes in mind I am honoured to have the privilege of serving as the Chairman for this evening’s proceedings. I am humbled, pleased and grateful to LOOKWE to be able to play a role, however small, in helping to bring this evening’s concept to reality.

My friends, above all, it is your presence here tonight that is making this Third Global Diplomats Chinese Cultural Night a memorable and enchanting event. As the spirit of this evening enfolds you, do be sure to enjoy yourself thoroughly.

    Thank You.
