Guyana Embassy Welcomes Young Cultural Ambassadors

The Embassy of Guyana once again teamed up with the China Young Cultural Ambassadors (CYCA), on another interactive programme to foster cultural cooperation and promote learning in July and August.

Founded in 2010, the CYCA is a series of public welfare activities hosted by the Chinese Society of Education, for teenagers and children, with the aim of “Bringing the world to Chinese children and taking Chinese culture to children all over the world”. Its overall objective is to increase opportunities for children to participate in the arts, develop leadership skills, and to facilitate communication and interactions with their peers around the world. It organizes study and performance tours for Chinese children around the world and, much like Young Cultural Ambassadors’ programmes in other countries, supports their exposure to and engagement in all forms of cultural activities.

Cultural Ambassadors from all across China travelled to Beijing in July to participate in a summer camp and the CYCA Finals at the Beijing Foreign Studies University. The activity took the form of a Model UN where students spent several days learning about a selected list of countries – including Guyana, and represented one of them at the finals. They were taken on study tours to museums, Embassies and the World Park among other places, to familiarize themselves with the culture and customs of the countries and were asked to deliver presentations on the day of the finals.  They were judged based on their (English & Mandarin) language ability, familiarity with the subject matter and other criteria.

The Embassy was invited to serve on the judging panel and to host tours of visiting cultural ambassadors. Counsellor Neishanta Benn participated in the judging exercise on July 20, 2017 and the young ambassadors were invited to a tour of the Embassy on August 3, 2017.

The presentation focused on the Guyanese people, traditions, festivals and cuisine and was enriched by a hands-on presentation on Guyana’s cocoa culture and introduction to chocolate-making by Mrs. Connie Hong of PlanetChoco. PlanetChoco is a company dedicated to promoting happy, healthy and fashionable (organic) chocolate culture and lifestyles in China.

There was much excitement as the students were taught to grind, taste and eat their way through the chocolate-making process. Refreshments were served and the students bid farewell to Embassy staff and presented them with hand-made tokens of appreciation.

The Embassy is grateful for the support of the China Young Cultural Ambassadors and PlanetChoco, and for their roles in enhancing the development of bilateral exchanges between Guyana and China.
